Anacostan Fishing Village Site Was Found in SW DC in 1866!

Thanks to DC Historian, Hayden Wetzel, we'll soon have an additional item on the Once As It Was DC map -
"Indian relics were found in SW DC" when the James Creek Canal was being built in 1866!
(Evening Star, Page 3 of 12/20/1866),

The James Creek Canal ran along what is now 2nd St. SW, on the edge of the new soccer stadium in Buzzard Point.

The title of the article was: "The James Creek Canal - Discovery of Relics of the Aborigines"

The news article states:

"During the progress of the work quite a number of Indian relics, such as pestiles, with which corn was beaten, axes, spear and arrowheads were taken up by the mud machine. They were mostly taken from one spot within an area of thirty feet, and it is believed they were used by the Anacostia tribe of Indians, who inhabited the region, and who formerly had a fishing station about that point "
